The Block 8 sub-section of our Resurrection vineyard is located at the highest point in the north-eastern corner where the soils become shallow and rocky. This section is planted to Maywald clone Shiraz (100 year old selection) which following harvest, was open fermented before maturation in aged oak hogsheads. Older oak was used to accentuate the incredibly vibrant and fragrant varietal characters that this unique combination of clone, soil and location provides.RRP AU$38.00 | ORDER NOW

2016 Block 8 Shiraz: 100 Best Australian Wines 18/19 - Matthew Jukes – Jul 2018

The 2016 Block 8 Shiraz, Resurrection Vineyard is black in colour, deep, brooding and tarry. The fruit is intensely mulberry-stuffed and the flavour has awesome length. Block 8 sits in the highest sub-section of the Resurrection Vineyard, in Ebenezer, where the soils are at their shallowest and rockiest. Here, Maywald Selection Shiraz vines struggle away and this wine is the results of their graft. Once again, there is little winemaking to speak of because this fruit is so damned awesome it doesn’t need any help whatsoever.

“Clean, mixed black fruits nose. Slow to start but gathers pace rapidly as it travels. The fruit falls away towards the end, but there’s no great damage done. 94 points and an OK price at $38.”

A less common style for the Barossa, being of lower ripeness and intensity. But it is a very engaging wine with dried dark cherry, lively raspberry fruit and a supple mid-palate. There is a cool thread running through the wine, which ties in nicely with the restraint of the fruit. An excellent partner to food.

“Grown on the highest section of the Resurrection Vineyard, at Ebenezer in the Barossa. Fermented cool in open fermenters before going into old oak. 12.9% alcohol. Over the past few years this Block 8 Shiraz has proven itself as one of the most interesting shiraz-based wines on the Australian red wine landscape. The low alcohol is noticeable in a good way. It helps make the wine immensely drinkable, for starters, but it also allows the wine’s aromas room to move and express themselves, and for the palate to flow free of any alcohol-warmth hinder. Of course this is not a big, bad or black-coloured Barossa shiraz; it falls more into the ‘ethereal’ basket. Light cherries, fennel, spices and earth kind of thing. Refreshing. The kind of Barossa shiraz that you can both ponder, because there are flavours peering around each corner, and also drink several glasses of, without much undue effect. I’m a fan. ”

“Deep, dense, lifted. The colour of the lining of Dracula’s cape – his formal dining one, not hunting. Hints of nutmeg and spice; and that damson plum the Barossa throws. The texture is chewy, and some choc-mint lurks. And at 13.4 per cent alcohol, it’s a health tonic more than a red wine. If you love rich, expressive shiraz, you’ll love this; or if you’ve lost your love of Barossa shiraz because of all the high alcohol and fruit-bomb wines, this will rekindle the happy feeling. Cellar it confidently or double decant before drinking now. Chinese beef or duck suit it well, which I choose to eat in an oriental restaurant, as I do those dishes such a disservice by trying to cook them at home. ”

“From the Ebenezer sub-region. From the highest point of the vineyard, where the soils are “shallow and rocky”. Open fermented, left on skins for 10 days, then into all (used) French oak. Indeed all third fill oak, so there’s very little oak flavour imparted here. It’s light, it’s lively, it remains tasty and well-structured. It just goes to show that you’re don’t need to be balls out to still manage a bit of gravitas. Spice, liquorice and leather notes play keen and attractive roles. Cranberries and cherries, sweet and spicy. Strings of herbs flow through the finish. Quite delicious! ”

“Sub-titled “Maywald Clone Resurrection”. The vineyard was planted via selected cuttings of old Barossa vines. The wine was matured in second and third fill French oak hogsheads. It weighs in at only 12.7% alcohol. Barossa shiraz, fabulously fragrant and fresh. Can’t emphasise the word fresh enough; it’s a runaway of a wine, emancipated, its heels kicked off. It tastes of jubey blackberry and liquorice, graphite and smoky, coal-like earth. There’s a lift of florals too; violets. The urge to settle in and just drink this wine, now, is immense.”
