Block 3 Shiraz

Old Vine 1935 Plantings
Resurrection Vineyard, Ebenezer
BAROSSA VALLEY

The Block 3 sub-section of our Resurrection vineyard is planted to five acres of twisted, gnarly old Shiraz vines. They were planted in the early 1930’s in the deep, vibrant red Ebenezer dirt impregnated with ironstone. The precious fruit from these vines was harvested at optimum flavour ripeness before small-batch open fermentation in half tonne bins with regular pump-overs during maceration. Malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in three-year seasoned, tight-grained French oak Hogsheads (50% new). The result is a soulful and powerful expression of Barossa old vine Shiraz.

Wine Press and Accolades

2015 Block 3 Shiraz: 94 points – Tony Keys - The Key Report – Sep 2017

“Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015: The smell is impressive, lifting from the glass long before the nose hovers over it. It’s 14.5 per cent but far from heavy. Plenty of black fruit flavours and good depth along with length. 94 points and $38 is fair value. ”

2015 Block 3 Shiraz: 95 points – Halliday Wine Companion 2018 – Aug 2017

“Fabulous shiraz. Meaty, peppery, earthen and yet flush with ripe blackberry, even tipping into blackcurrant. Presents a fresh face and backs it with substance. Smoky oak never intrudes; only adds. No doubt it will cellar but it’s thoroughly irresistible now.”

2015 Block 3 Shiraz: 93 points – Toni Paterson - The Real Review – Mar 2017

Gorgeous concentration and purity of fruit. Mulberry and dark plum on the nose. Sweet, ripe, juicy fruit on the palate, with hints of red rose. A full-bodied, intensely flavoured, Barossa shiraz with excellent vibrancy and character. Fragrant and lip-smackingly delicious.

2015 Block 3 Shiraz: 91 Points – Huon Hooke - Hooked on Wine – Aug 2016

“Deep red/purple colour and a retiring aroma of sweet plums, dried herbs and blackberry. Thyme and oregano hints. Well-structured full body; ample soft texture and a fine skein of grainy, drying tannin. Youthful and worth cellaring.”

2015 Block 3 Shiraz: 94 points – Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front – Jul 2016

“From the same vineyard as the Block 8 Shiraz, but from old vines at the bottom of the vineyard. Similar/same winemaking, though the oak is newer. A dense, dark, rich wine with both its faculties and freshness intact. This is a lovely wine. Meaty and peppery and yet blackberried and earthen. Woodsmoke/toast characters play a complementary role. It struts its stuff, and gives complexity a nudge too. ”

2014 Block 3 Shiraz: 91 Points – Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The Wine Advocate – Oct 2015

“Possessing a deep garnet-purple colour, the 2014 Block 3 1935 Planting Shiraz Barossa Valley is full of lifted notes of crushed red and black currants, kirsch, blueberry pie, violets and a touch of dried mulberries. The spicy, medium-full bodied palate is fresh, has chewy tannins and a long, earthy finish.”

2014 Block 3 Shiraz Barossa Valley: 95 Points – Campbell Mattinson – Aug 2015

“Sub-titled “Old Vine 1935 Plantings Resurrection Vineyard”. Open fermented in half-tonne bins. The wine saw all French oak, 50% new. That bit extra. That certain something. This is fresh and fruitful but spun with tannin. It’s elegant but rich, caked with blackberry but floral and vigorous. It’s a joyful wine, a celebration of shiraz grown in the Ebenezer sub-region. Gorgeous fruit.”

2014 Block 3 Shiraz Barossa Valley: 97 points – Rob Geddes MW – Aug 2015

“Drinks well now and has potential. Very fragrant, lively complex ripe black fruits, with the classic regional herbal touch of almost gherkin and intense green olive. The palate is elegant and long, medium full bodied with an appealing fresh dark berry middle palate, unpacking into dried spices, smoked meats, and long fruits. A final kick of lifted red cherry on the finish that lingers for 30 plus seconds. Lovely dry red style.”

2014 Block 3 Shiraz Barossa Valley: 95 Points – James Halliday – Aug 2015

“Hand-picked form a very early ripening black, open-fermented in half-tonne bins; matured in three air-dried French hogsheads. Has class stamped all over it, mouthfilling, yet perfectly balanced and harmonious, fruit, oak and tannins all on the one page.”
